If nothing is found, is the handle definitely free?
No, and we won't claim otherwise. Instagram reserves names, and banned or deactivated accounts keep holding theirs. 'No public account found' is the honest answer — the only way to know for certain is to try it in the app.
Why show me who has it?
Because it changes what you do next. A handle held by an account with three posts from 2016 is worth asking about. One held by an active brand isn't.
Can you get a taken username released for me?
No. Instagram doesn't release usernames on request, and anyone promising otherwise is selling you something that won't work.
Does it work for private accounts?
Yes for the check itself — a private account still holds its handle, so it shows as taken.
What makes a good handle?
